New Gear for 2023

ScentLok’s BE:1 Ridge

So I bought this about a month or so before hunting season, and was really interested in the idea that it was a hoodie versus a zip up jacket. If you know me, I prefer hoodies over anything else during the colder months. Last year prior to the weekend for gun, I bought the Reactor jacket, which was much more of a zip up hoodie than anything. While it was a good windbreaker, it wasn’t good for 32 and below weather. So after consulting a gentlemen who works with Spypoint but also works for Scentlok, I landed on the Ridge versus the Divergent, thinking it should keep me warm while on the side of the mountain. For anything above freezing, it’s a good mid-season layer, but once it gets sub 40 or even colder, it doesn’t do well. I had to put the Reactor jacket, underneath the Ridge so I could stay warm. The combination worked well for those sub freezing days. I did love the large center pocket for my hands to keep them warm, during those days. Combine that with a hand warmer and that’ll be toasty warm. The built in neck gator was a great feature to keep the wind off the face, but like most neck gators for me, my glasses fog up most the time, so I didn’t use it much. All in all, the Ridge is a great 40 degree or more layer with a good base layer on and I would recommend it for as such.

ScentLok’s BE:1 Divergent Pant

These pants initially worried me because of how thick they are, but the moment I put them on my legs were warm as anything. Multiple layers of pockets for gear, which is great considering I like to carry my Wyndscent stuff in those pockets. The suspenders were a great touch too. Instead of having a bib on my chest, even though a couple days there I wish I had the extra layer, it was great to have more mobility with my chest. Downside was I still needed to have a belt on to keep the pants up. Too much stuff in the pockets, and you’re pants are sliding down, and the velcro straps to the suspenders pop off and you need to take the pants off to make sure you get it into the right loop again. I do wish that it was almost a full length zipper for getting boots on with the pants on, but it wasn’t that big of a deal. All in all, the Divergent Pants are very warm and will keep you warm during those cold, cold days, especially sub freezing.

Wyndscent Thermal

The thermal is a new interesting device that Wyndscent came out with this year along with their thermal pads. The pads can go on any type of heating element whether it is electric or butane, or the pads can be hung on trees, or placed around mock scrapes (The pads are biodegradable). Depending on which way you use the pads, the scent is dispersed over a longer period of time without the heating element, but a shorter time with the heating element. I ran the E-Thermal with the pads, and unfortunately something malfunctioned where the battery tray had filled with oil. Wyndscent sent me a new one and I’m waiting to hear back from them as to what actually happened with it because it was weird that it happened. I do like the concept of the pads and the E-Thermal, not to mention for the summer time, there are mosquito repellent pads.

Spypoint Flex-S

An awesome camera to add to the line up from Spypoint. While it has a solar panel on top to keep the battery fully charged, it also takes a normal battery tray as back up for it. It comes with an instant mode, that when turned on in the app, when you request a photo or video. Downside is, the battery drains quickly.

Spypoint Flex G-36

The G-36 is a Flex from Spypoint with better battery consumption, and a better camera. I’ve been posting video from my Instagram from this camera, and it does really well.

Spypoint LM2

The LM2 from Spypoint is an updated, upgraded, and better Link-Micro. The pictures are higher quality, and connection has been pretty good. Battery usage has been a little bit more quickly used versus the micros. Personally love the LM2’s and the micros because they use up their batteries the slowest.

Spypoint Force-Pro-S

Another set and forget normal trail camera but with a solar panel attached to it. Kyle and I put it out in the summer and haven’t gone down to check that camera since I put it out. Will be interesting to see when I go to get it when we open the farm up in 2024.
