S&B Cold Air Intake

So one of the modifications I have done to the truck in the last couple months is adding on a cold air intake.

Since I inherited my F150, I’ve been looking into doing something to make it sound a little more rough and tough with a little roar because it’s a generation one 5.0 liter, Coyote engine. The same engine they put in the Mustang, but this is a truck version.

I finally came across the one I was liking after being pushed in this direction by a friend of mine who has been helping me with modifying the truck. The biggest key with this is the filter itself is a dry filter, and not one that requires you to oil it down before reinstalling back on the intake. Not to mention it made the engine bay look better, with one giant tube going into the throttle body.

The install process wasn’t too bad. I did put the Mass Air Flow Sensor on backwards, which caused the truck to go into limp mode and wouldn’t stay on. Once I figured it out and reversed the sensor, the truck ran perfectly.

After I installed it, between doing the spark plugs, adding an oil separator, and now adding the cold air intake, my average miles per gallon have gone up to almost 20 mpg from 17 and change. That’s something that is worth it in my book to have, especially with gas prices fluctuating so much these days.

Over the summer I took the truck up to the family farm, and my uncle was up there from South Carolina. We drove to town and then back up the mountain after dinner, and he says to me, “huh, this truck sounds a lot louder than it used to.” I told him it was all due to the new intake.

When I went to drop my daughter off at daycare, I took the truck because I hadn’t driven it all week. I was going to go through an intersection, and the light turned yellow. This intersection is a pain in the butt. I didn’t want to wait and hit the gas. My daughter was asleep originally. When I hit the gas, the engine roared in a way I didn’t know it was possible. She woke up, and I was laughing due to the roar it made. Side note: I may all of the sudden like loud trucks — can’t imagine how that happened.

Next step: Exhaust. And a tune.
