There’s a lot of different builds out there for a Powertech tank, some including accuracy in their gear, while other’s don’t. I’m here to provide my build and explain my reasoning for it.
Aim: Your aim stat increases the amount of threat you generate.
Shield Chance: You’re going to want this towards the 40% area
Absorb: This you’ll want to have in the 40% area as well.
Defense: I don’t prioritize Defense as much, I keep it around 15% where the soft (diminishing returns) cap starts.
Accuracy: I keep my accuracy at 110% this way I can hold aggro from some bosses and not have to worry about some sniper or marauder going off the wall on their damage, and cause the boss to turn and rip them apart.
Endurance: Obviously you’ll want a lot of endurance to soak up some hits from the bosses.
Power: This is an absolute last stat you worry about. Power comes from augments that you have put on your gear to increase your shield or Absorb or Defense.
Rotation:
The most important thing about being a powertech tank, is your rotation.
Cell: Ion cell has to be active. You need this so you generate threat, as well as getting an increase to your defensive stats.
First: Jet Charge. It deals a moderate amount of damage and threat. It also procs’ your flame sweep and if it is a multi-mob pull, having those free flame sweeps help generate threat instead of wasting your Sonic Missile on them.
Second: Rocket Punch. Deals a decent amount of damage but also sets up where if it’s on cooldown, and you shield an attack, you can use it instantaneously. I use rocket punch when its off cooldown a lot.
Third: Rail Shot. With rocket punch, your Ion Cell dot has been triggered and rail shot should be up. Use this after rocket punch or when its off cooldown.
Fourth: Flame burst. This ability helps generate threat, and because your fire abilities deal more damage, you throw this up when everything else is on cooldown.
Fifth: Heat blast. Once I’ve generated 3 heat screens, I use this. It lowers my heat but at the same time it increases my shield chance by 25%. Use this whenever 3 heat screens are up.
That’s my main rotation once starting up to gain threat. I add Rapid Shots after every move to lower heat as well as try to attempt the Ion Cell dot. I also add in Unload because it does deal a decent amount of damage and threat as well as Shoulder Cannon. I use Flame Thrower whenever I have a low amount of heat but also whenever flame engine is up because flame thrower is then free, as well as twice as fast. I do use Oil Slick when its available to lower melee and ranged accuracy by 30%. In a situation where I know my DPS teammates are pumping out more DPS and threat than I am, to start the fight I add in Explosive Fuel to help increase my threat and critical chance on abilities, and I especially use it when I have flame engine up before I use flame thrower and then right afterward unload.
Relics:
For my powertech, I use the Shrouded Crusader line of relics, that are on use. Mainly because having a shield that turns on for you when you want it to is mighty helpful. I use the Shield Amplification line of relics as well to proc a shield every 20 seconds.
Defensive Cooldowns:
Energy Shield: I keep this as an absolute last resort shield and when things go south, I have this up.
Kolto Overload: If the healers in my group are struggling, I have this to help me out as well when things go south and the healers need that extra second to send me a heal.
Shrouded Crusader Relic: Like I said before, this is handy shield for just a little extra defense.
Absorb Adrenal: I personally use the Reusable Nano-Infused Absorb Adrenal which boost my absorb. Stat wise though, the Prototype Nano-Infused is actually better. I’m just cheap and don’t want to forget about buying them from time to time.
Medpac: Again I use the reusable medpac for those moments where things have gone south.
Buffs:
As a tank, you want to have the Fortitude stim, because it does provide a buff to your defense rating as well. You also want to have all four class buffs, as well as having all five companion types affection maxed, so that you get each of their buffs.
Miscellaneous:
Trust me when I say this, you are going to want to have the Repair Droid unlocked, you are going to have wipes so. Also having the Tactical Markers helps for when other members of your group don’t know what to do.
That’s it. Questions or comments? Post below!
